How NTPC Secured Laos' Most Critical Energy Site with Nx Witness.

Organization: Nam Theun 2 Power Company (NTPC), Khammouane Province, Laos

Challenge: A manufacturer-locked NVR system offered no failover protection, limited concurrent access across multiple control rooms, and time-consuming manual event retrieval that could not meet the demands of an active power generation facility the region relied on.

Solution: Nx Witness replaced the legacy NVR infrastructure with an open, scalable VMS delivering automatic failover, multi-brand camera support, at edge AI integration, and Motion Smart Search across all control rooms.

The Nam Theun 2 hydropower plant is one of the most significant infrastructure projects ever completed in Laos. Operated by the Nam Theun 2 Power Company (NTPC) and jointly developed with the Government of Laos, the 1,070 MW facility began commercial operations in 2010, supplying electricity to the Lao national grid while exporting the majority of its output to Thailand.

Operating a facility of this scale requires continuous, reliable oversight across the entire site. As the plant's monitoring needs grew and operators across multiple control rooms increased, the limitations of the existing NVR infrastructure became challenging to work around. The system was locked to a single camera manufacturer, offered no failover capability in the event of a server failure, and required slow manual review to locate recorded footage. For a power plant in active operation, this approach did not meet the facilities operational requirements.

NTPC partnered with PABX Laos, a Network Optix distributor and system integrator in Laos, to find a replacement.

1. Legacy Systems: The existing standalone DVRs and keypad access controls could not keep pace with the growing number of users across the facility. 

2. No Failover Protection: A server failure meant a complete loss of recording across the site with no automatic recovery. For a power plant supplying energy to an entire region, recording gaps were not something NTPC could risk.

3. Limited Scalability: Concurrent access across separate control rooms was difficult to manage, reducing overall situational awareness for teams working in different areas of the facility

4. Time-Consuming Event Retrieval: Finding specific footage meant manually reviewing recordings with no intelligent search capability, slowing down operators whenever a review was needed.

The deployment of Nx Witness by PABX Laos addressed each of these challenges:

1. Failover at No Additional Cost: When setup, Nx Witness automatically discovers and attaches cameras from a failed server to the first available failover-enabled server, keeping recording running without operator intervention and without any additional licensing cost.

2. Multi-Brand Camera Support: Existing cameras were integrated alongside new devices from Bosch, Dahua, Wisenet, and i-Pro into a unified system, protecting the existing hardware investment without requiring a full overhaul.
